Lets Green It!

Responsible travel and sustainable tourism is what all universal citizens should be thinking of before strapping on their travel aficionado boots and setting off to conquer the world. We should all be in search of meaningful tourism - the type which brings positive change to a destination - and not only takes but also gives back. Our efforts should therefore concentrate on both social and eco-friendly initiatives that engage and benefit the local communities.

We must become the generation of sharers, givers and saviors!

As we all know carbon emissions and subsequent carbon footprints are environmental issues directly contributing to global warming. Just to brush up on our knowledge - A carbon footprint is "the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product" (UK Carbon Trust 2008).

Although the humble auto rickshaw only has a small 2 stroke engine, we cannot deny the fact that we will be driving fuel burning machines for over 10 days. So it is our responsibility to make up for any negative impact we might generate.

Using a carbon emission calculator we were able to estimate a ballpark figure of the CO2 emissions which we expect to produce through our event.

So:

0.182 tons CO2 from driving per team         = 4.55 tons

1.647 tons CO2 from flights per participant = 90.585 tons

                                                                      = 95.135 tons in total

* Based on 25 teams / 55 participants / 1,200 km’s
* Flights calculated on a 4 hr flight
* source http://www.nativeenergy.com/pages/travel_calculator/30.php

So what does this mean? Well, it means that as individuals we are contributing to global warming every single day and that Lanka Challenge is no exception. But most importantly, it means that we need to decide on what we are going to do about this and many other social and environmental issues.

One thing is for sure - we are going to make it count! and by "we" I mean every single participant and supporter of our event.

So in addition to the Lanka Challenge responsible tourism plan which we will execute throughout the race, we would also like to hear your ideas and hopefully incorporate these to our sustainable initiatives.

For now we will leave you with the following fact....we would only need to plant 4 trees per person in order to offset the total of 95.135 tons of CO2 emissions foreseen. So expect soil, gum boots, and spades...

Lets us know your thoughts...

Keep cracking,

Juan - Reporting from the spicy island
